At Bravo Savings Network, we love data that helps people choose where to live, work and travel smarter. So we at BSN set out to answer a simple question with a rigorous approach: what are the trendiest cities in Italy right now? With hybrid work opening new possibilities and many Italians rediscovering smaller hubs, we evaluated lifestyle and culture through a fresh lens. The result is an original BSN Trend Index that spotlights the urban scenes delivering the best blend of food and drink, shopping, arts, beauty, attractions, and wellness.
How we built the BSN Trend Index
We analyzed the 25 largest Italian cities by population and measured the availability of “trendy” venues and services across 34 factors grouped into 6 categories:
- Food & Drink
- Arts & Culture
- Fashion & Shopping
- Beauty
- City Attractions
- Outdoors & Wellness
To ensure a fair comparison, we normalized results to each city’s population and, where appropriate, to land area, then scored every factor from 1 to 25 and combined scores into category and overall ranks. We also reviewed monthly cost of living as contextual information for movers and long-stay travelers, though it did not drive category scores.
Our primary sources were paginebianche.it and tripadvisor.it, and we captured a consistent snapshot between April 1 and April 10, 2022. All amounts are shown in euros, as per the original dataset.
Italy’s top 10 trendiest cities
Here is the definitive BSN ranking, balancing vibrancy with accessibility and breadth with density.
- Florence (Firenze) – Our number one city blends Renaissance heritage with a modern pulse. Florence ranks in the top five across every category, and it leads for museums, theaters, bookstores, bars and restaurants. With more than 7,100 points of interest, you will never run out of things to do. The trade-off is a relatively higher monthly cost of living.
- Parma – Known for prosciutto and Parmigiano Reggiano, Parma also tops our Beauty category, leading for tattoo, piercing and manicure density. A sizable student population helps push the city to second place for bars and nightclubs relative to its 146,299 residents, and it shines in Fashion & Shopping as well.
- Cagliari – The Sardinian capital is the best value in our top 10, with an estimated monthly cost around €1,125. It ranks first for Food & Drink, including breweries and nightlife, and offers more than ten restaurants per square kilometer across its 85.45 km².
- Brescia – Nestled between Verona and Milan at the foot of the Alps, Brescia is a sleeper hit. It reaches the top five in all major categories and lands third in Arts & Culture, Beauty and Outdoors & Wellness. Its balance of affordability and access is compelling.
- Modena – Beyond Motor Valley legends like Ferrari and Maserati, Modena is a food lover’s paradise. It ranks near the top for bistros and food markets, and third for nightclubs. The city also excels in Fashion & Shopping on a per capita basis.
- Bologna – Often celebrated as Italy’s unofficial food capital, Bologna still lands sixth overall once population is factored in. It counts roughly 3,100 restaurants and a dense 22 dining spots per km², plus a top five finish in Fashion & Shopping and abundant green spaces.
- Milan (Milano) – Italy’s style powerhouse places seventh overall. It ranks first for art galleries with 261 venues and boasts the second-highest total number of shops after Rome. It also has the largest population in our top 10 and the highest monthly costs at about €1,698.60.
- Trieste – Compact and cosmopolitan, Trieste places second for City Attractions with nearly three points of interest per km² and 248 arts-and-culture venues. It is also one of the most budget-friendly cities in our top tier.
- Reggio Emilia – Despite the smallest population in our top 10, Reggio Emilia excels in Outdoors & Wellness, with numerous pools and fitness centers. It has fewer attractions per km² than compact coastal hubs, but delivers strong quality-of-life amenities.
- Verona – A UNESCO favorite and the storied home of Romeo and Juliet, Verona ranks second in Beauty, with over ten salons per km². Its historic plazas and pink marble streets add plenty of atmosphere to a pampering weekend.
