Where to Save the Most on Your Weekly Grocery Shop

At Bravo Savings Network, we constantly track where Americans can stretch their grocery dollars without sacrificing quality. For this analysis, our team at BravoDeal evaluated the real cost of an average weekly shop for a household of three, using current prices across six of the nation’s biggest grocery retailers. The outcome is a clear ranking of where your budget goes furthest right now.

The Cheapest Grocery Stores at a Glance

Here is the ranking by total cost for a typical weekly basket, sized for a household of three:

What Stood Out in Our Price Checks

1. Aldi, the clear winner

Aldi delivered the lowest overall basket at $185.18. Everyday staples anchored the savings, including L’Oven Fresh bread at about $1.29 a loaf and a 12-pack of eggs at roughly $1.71. With more than two thousand stores nationwide, Aldi’s private-label playbook continues to set the pace on base groceries.

2. Walmart, savings plus convenience

Walmart’s basket came in at $225.22. Standout items included Great Value shredded cheese near $2.22 and a wallet-friendly white wine option around $3.46 per 750 ml. Broad assortment, strong private labels and ubiquitous locations keep Walmart highly competitive.

3. Target, style meets value

Target placed third at $239.62. We saw notably low prices on a 5 lb Russet potato bag at about $2.99 and Favorite Day syrup at $2.29. For shoppers who blend groceries with home and apparel, Target remains a smart stop.

4. Kroger, fresh produce wins

Kroger’s weekly shop totaled $284.78, with best-in-class pricing on organic spinach at roughly $2.29 a bag and bananas near $0.56 per lb. The chain’s produce value stood out even as the overall basket was higher than the discount leaders.

5. Sam’s Club, bulk with caveats

Sam’s Club led warehouse clubs with a $523.22 basket. Key meat values included 80/20 ground beef around $3.88 per lb and boneless, skinless chicken breasts at about $2.68 per lb. Membership-only models shine on unit pricing, but total weekly cost can rise if you are not consuming bulk pack sizes efficiently.

6. Costco, strong on unit price

Costco posted $552.90 for the weekly basket, though it excelled on certain unit prices such as a 3 L olive oil at roughly $0.18 per oz. As with any club store, the value is maximized when households can store, share or quickly use bulk quantities.

Why prices moved the way they did

To build the basket, we used the most commonly purchased grocery items identified through Market Basket Analysis on Kaggle. We then priced the cheapest comparable product at each retailer and summed the cost per product to reflect how real shoppers buy. The average U.S. household size of 2.51 was rounded to a household of three for realism.

“With the cost of living up sharply since the pandemic and groceries up about 25% since 2020, shoppers are laser-focused on value,” said Marco Farnararo, CEO and Co-Founder of Bravo Savings Network. “Bulk buying can look cheaper, but per-unit prices are not always lower than mass retailers like Walmart.”

How to use this ranking

If you want the lowest weekly total, shop Aldi first. If convenience and range matter, Walmart and Target are close contenders. For produce-forward trips, Kroger is compelling. Warehouse clubs can still be a win, especially for larger families or shared households, but scrutinize per-unit math and storage needs.

As we continue to track prices, our mission at Bravo Savings Network is simple: help you keep more of your money in your pocket, every single week.
